WABetaInfo Concept Shows WhatsApp Voice Calls Coming to Apple Watch

January 1, 2026 by Harish Reddy Gudi

WhatsApp’s Apple Watch app has undergone significant improvements recently, but one major feature is still missing: voice calling without an iPhone nearby. A new concept shared by WABetaInfo now imagines how WhatsApp voice calls could work directly on the Apple Watch, potentially turning it into a more independent communication device.

What WhatsApp on Apple Watch Can Do Right Now

The current WhatsApp app for Apple Watch already supports several useful features:

  • Send and read full text messages
  • Record and send voice messages
  • React with emojis
  • View chats directly on the watch screen

However, despite these upgrades, the app still has a major limitation.

The Biggest Limitation Today

  • WhatsApp on Apple Watch is not a standalone app
  • It works only as a companion app
  • Requires a paired iPhone nearby
  • No direct calling support from the watch itself

This means users can’t make WhatsApp calls independently, even on LTE-enabled Apple Watch models.

What the WABetaInfo Concept Suggests

WABetaInfo has now shared a concept design that imagines a more advanced WhatsApp experience on Apple Watch.

Key idea:

  • WhatsApp voice calls directly from the Apple Watch
  • No iPhone required for calling
  • Works over:
    • Cellular (LTE)
    • Wi-Fi

This would bring WhatsApp closer to native calling apps on watchOS.

How Voice Calling on Apple Watch Could Work

According to the concept:

  • Users could start and receive WhatsApp voice calls
  • Calls would appear with a dedicated call interface
  • Audio routed through:
    • Built-in speaker
    • Connected Bluetooth earphones
  • Ideal for:
    • Short conversations
    • On-the-go calling
    • Situations where carrying an iPhone isn’t practical

Why This Would Be a Big Deal

Standalone WhatsApp calling on Apple Watch would:

  • Make the watch more independent
  • Reduce dependency on smartphones
  • Improve usability for:
    • Runners
    • Gym users
    • Travelers
  • Match features already available on:
    • Cellular Apple Watch calling
    • Native FaceTime Audio

What’s Still Missing

Important to note:

  • This is only a concept
  • WhatsApp has not officially announced this feature
  • No timeline or beta confirmation yet
  • Apple Watch app still relies on iPhone syncing

Could This Happen in the Future?

Possibly. WhatsApp has already:

  • Released a native Apple Watch app
  • Added richer messaging features
  • Shown interest in expanding platform support

A standalone calling feature would be a logical next step, especially as Apple continues pushing LTE and standalone app capabilities on watchOS.

Final Thoughts

While this remains a concept for now, it highlights what many users want from WhatsApp on Apple Watch: true independence. If Meta brings voice calling without an iPhone, it could significantly change how people use WhatsApp on wearables.
