WhatsApp is working on a new interface change that could simplify how users view updates on the platform. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a combined Updates tab on WhatsApp Web that brings Status updates and Channels into a single place.
What’s New
The upcoming Updates tab is designed to reduce clutter and make discovery easier:
- A single Updates tab for both Status and Channels
- Replaces the need to switch between separate sections
- Focused on cleaner navigation and better content visibility
How the Tab Works
The new layout is structured in a simple, familiar way:
- Top section: Displays Status updates from contacts
- Lower section: Dedicated to Channels content
- Users can browse and explore the Channel directory directly from this tab
This approach keeps personal updates and public content clearly separated while still living under one section.
Why WhatsApp Is Making This Change
- Makes it easier to discover Channels
- Reduces UI complexity on WhatsApp Web
- Aligns Status and Channels as “updates” rather than chats
For users who actively follow Channels, this could make WhatsApp Web more engaging and content-focused.
Availability Status
- Currently under testing
- Seen on WhatsApp Web
- Available to select beta users
- No official rollout timeline yet
As with most WhatsApp features, it is expected to roll out gradually once testing is complete.
What to Expect Next
If this feature reaches stable builds:
- Similar changes could eventually arrive on mobile apps
- Status and Channels may become more prominent on WhatsApp Web
- Channel discovery could improve significantly
